Are you a careless reader of the word?

“But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth]. For if anyone only listens to the word without obeying it, he is like a man who looks very carefully at his natural face in a mirror; But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God in what he does [in his life of obedience].” James‬ ‭1:22-23, 25‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Are you a careless reader of the word? If I asked you about the sermon or verse you read yesterday would you remember it? Have you internalized it? How has it influenced your attitudes and decisions today?

God has been challenging me to listen again! Read again! Go over that book again!

In a world where there is abundance of the word, it’s easy to think we are maturing spiritually because of the knowledge we are acquiring while we are not walking in any of it… In one of the Bible courses I attended the lecturer kept repeating “spiritual maturity should be measured by how much the Bible influences every area of your life”.

Join me in taking a moment this wee… go over that Sunday sermon again! While you are at it ask God to help you walk in it… May the remainder of this year and 2021 be a season of transformation for us.

Last week during Bible study I was reminded that, “the same breath that God breathed on Adam to give him life and Jesus to raise Him from the dead is the same breath He breathed on His word!” So His word to a believer is not just a history book. His word is alive. His word is living! Shaper than a double edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

May we engage the word with an open heart! Ready to be shaped and molded into His image.
