As I was humming this hymn during my commute to work this morning, an overwhelming sense of joy, imparted by the Holy Spirit, filled my spirit. The look from the driver next to me clearly said, “What an odd character!”
I bet Edgar Page Stites, when he composed this hymn back in 1875, couldn’t have imagined a woman from South Africa would be so uplifted by his words while traveling to her workplace. The works inspired by God truly transcend time — it’s yet another reason why I hold such deep love for Jesus.
Lyrics: [O Beulah land, sweet Beulah land! Standing on your highest peak, I gaze out over the sea towards the mansions prepared for me,
And behold the glorious shining shore, my Heaven, my forever home.
My Savior walks beside me, providing sweet companionship;
He gently guides me with His hand, as this is the boundary of Heaven.]
The song draws its meaning from Isaiah 62:4; “No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married.” May the promise of Isaiah 62:4 manifest in your life. You will no longer bear the name of forsaken! Your homeland will cease to be called desolate! You will be known as Hephzibah, a name that signifies not only delight, but also renown as “the protected one.”
Your land shall be called Beulah, an emblem of favor and blessings from the Lord.
